We call our journey ‘the beautiful struggle’. This is our Action Plan to move forward in solving Greater Manchester's Housing Emergency. We want people to know what it is really like to be homeless. Our Vision is to end the housing crisis everywhere.",[10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31
Temporary Accommodation should be fit and suitable for people to live in.","HOW?

• A B&B should be a last resort, not a go to.

• Temporary accommodation should be enforced to a minimum standard and should be upheld by regulation.

• Accommodation should be suitable for different people’s needs. For example, a person in recovery should not be placed in accommodation with people who are in active addiction.

• Private companies should not be able to profit from people experiencing homelessness.

• It should be easier to challenge the suitability of temporary accommodation. The council both provides temporary accommodation and assesses its suitability: this conflict of interest shouldn’t exist. Public money is being spent; there should be greater scrutiny and accountability.

More Social Housing must be built.","HOW?

• The government should stop spending millions on temporary accommodation and start investing in building more social housing.

• Instead of people sitting on empty and derelict buildings and land as investments, they should be renovated and used for housing.

• Introduce and enforce a law that guarantees a proportion of social housing for all new developments, and tie up loopholes which allow this to be avoided.

• End the Right to Buy to halt the decrease in Social Housing.

• An inquiry should be held into where money raised from Right to Buy has been spent.

Stop penalising people experiencing homelessness for working.","HOW?

• Temporary Accommodation should be affordable for those in work.

• When someone gets a job, benefits should not be stopped if the pay is not enough to cover rent, bills and the costs needed for living.

• If someone starts work, benefits should be paused, not stopped, so that if they come out of work again they do not need to reapply for benefits.

Section 21 ‘No-Fault’ evictions should be scrapped.","HOW?

• There should be more protection for tenants. Landlords should not be able to evict tenants for no reason.

There should be no gatekeeping of services which exist to help people facing homelessness.","HOW?

• Local government services should avoid jargon and communicating in ways that feel intimidating. It should be easy for people facing homelessness to access help.

• ‘Gatekeepers’ should have a person-centered approach. They should treat people with empathy and respect, be trauma-informed, and practice active listening. Every person is different and the support they need will be specific to them.

• Disability and Neurodiversity should be taken into account and services should be accessible for everyone.

• Paperwork should be more accessible and less complex, and there should be a buddy system with designated helpers (with lived experience) to help others navigating the process. Buddies should have opportunities for development and progression.

• ‘Gatekeepers’ should be from the community they serve or have knowledge of the local community.

• There should be a more joined up approach between services, so that when trying to access help, people aren’t passed from one staff member/department to another.

• People should be able to present as homeless in the location they are at the time.

• There should not be a requirement to provide evidence as to where you have been living, or need to travel to a different location or Council.

Everyone should be able to access safe accommodation regardless of age and where they are from.","HOW?

• People under 35 should be able to access the same level of financial support for their housing as people over 35. Age should not matter.

• Non-UK nationals should be entitled to safe accommodation and should be provided with funds so they can access accommodation.

The Government must give more support the most vulnerable people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.","HOW?

• Support from the government should be much easier to access.

• There should be no sanctions on benefits.

• Stop the enforcement of installing pre-payment meters.

• If someone has a prepaid meter with vouchers, they should not be required to have ID in order to redeem the vouchers and access gas and electricity.

• Late payment fees should be stopped. If someone is unable to pay for their gas and electricity, they are not going to be able to pay for a late payment fee on top of the bill.

• There should be more intervention from the government with current energy prices. Energy companies made huge profits last year. The government should target on these companies and pass the savings on to the public by reducing their energy bills.

Increase resource and powers to enable Local Government to properly support residents.","HOW?

• There should be a register of approved landlords. Landlords’ properties must be in an acceptable condition. Landlords must be on the register and their properties must be free of problems, like black mold or no electricity, in order to receive direct rent payments.

• Local government powers should be increased to allow councils enforcement powers to crack down on rogue landlords and to ensure suitability of housing for their tenants. There should be more staff to carry out inspections of properties.

• It should be illegal for landlords and agents to refuse to rent properties to people who receive benefits.

• There should be better education and signposting for tenants about their rights. They should be able to easily access information on what they are entitled to, what condition their home should be in, and what they can expect their landlord to do.
","content:action.yml","yaml","content","action.yml","action","yml
"/settings",[43,46,49
"Films","/films
"About","/about
"Read the action plan",true
"https://manchestermaze.uk","Manchester Maze",null,[57,59
twitter
facebook","content:settings.yml","Settings","settings.yml","settings",1790093005560]
